WHAT IS FEMALE ALOPECIA?

Hair loss is medically called alopecia. There are different types and causes of hair loss since women go through multiple life changes and situations that directly affect hair health.

Affecting up to 40% of women by age 50, it begins when women notice thinning of their hair and more hair loss in the shower, on the brush, and the pillow when they wake up in the morning.

Unlike men who suffer from male pattern hair loss, the signs and symptoms in women are more pronounced. Women with androgenic alopecia hair loss will notice hair thinning in the central and upper parts of the scalp, which will cause a widening of the race in the main part and even entrances.

What is the classification of female hair loss?

The typical pattern of female hair loss caused by genetics is classified by the degree of thinning.

One good news about female pattern hair loss is that it rarely leads to complete baldness, like in men.

Alopecia in women can occur during:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Menopause
  • Stressful situations
  • Hormonal changes
  • Strict diets
  • Hairstyle variation (hair follicle traction)
  • Beauty treatments they undergo, as they can directly affect hair health.

Can women have hair restoration surgery?

As long as there is a suitable donor region from which hair follicles can be harvested, women can benefit from hair restoration surgery.

Women who experience androgenetic alopecia or hair loss caused by scars from accidents, burns or cosmetic procedures are often good candidates for hair transplant surgery as long as they have a large donor region.

What are the types of alopecia in women?

Genetic hair loss is the most common and progressive type of hair loss. Men and women with androgenetic alopecia are born with inherited hair follicles that are sensitive to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone causes hair follicles to thin over time, producing thinner, more fragile hair. Eventually, the follicles stop growing hair, leaving only ``peach fuzz.`` Men with this condition usually notice a receding hairline at the front line or thinning at the crown.
